Creating Your Own Opportunities

Updated: Nov 29, 2020

"If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door" - Milton Berle

What is the one thing in your life that you could change to have the maximum positive impact?

So many of us wait for life to happen to us and we feel disappointment when those good things don't come our way.

If you want a change in your life, if you are hoping for greater opportunities, you need to make them.

Look around you. There are doors everywhere. Throughout Europe and Latin America the streets are lined with walls of beautiful doors hiding that which is behind them. Occasionally you are gifted with a glimpse of what is beyond, and it is usually magical.

Life is the same way. Life is constantly presenting you doors with magical opportunities beyond them, but it is up to you to open them and explore in order to find that which will motivate you, entice you, to make a change.

If you are struggling with the act of change, and you are living with complacency because you are waiting for "something" to come along, it may be time to build your own door to welcome the opportunities on the other side.

What do you really want?

How important is it, really?

How is it going to change your life?

What do you need to do in order to move towards achieving your goal?

Who can help you? It is so important to leverage your connections and relationships.

  • Know what you want

  • Make a plan

  • Take action

  • Keep track

For some, the door is already there and they just need to open it and walk through. Even then, it's scary to walk through to the unknown. When you build the door to open yourself to new opportunities and adventure, you usually have an idea of what may lie on the other side; and you have the ability to change the hinges or grease the squeaks as necessary.

Whether your door is simple or ornate, glass or steel, it is unique to you. Build it and put a big OPEN sign on the front. To build it and keep it closed will not only be a waste of time and energy and stalled dreams, but to keep it closed will leave you in no different position than you are now.

Nobody else is going to do it for you, so if opportunity isn't knocking and you are just waiting for something to happen, use that time to build your own personal access to opportunities and success.

The greatest opportunities are on the other side of change.
